DESCRIPTION:a collaboration with Missouri Botanical Garden\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Missouri Botanical Garden and Saint Louis Poetry Center in celebrating the launch of the debut poetry collection by Kristin Emanuel\, who will be reading with Amie Whittemore. Copies of Birdwatching in the 4th Dimension and Nest of Matches will be available for purchase from the poets. All proceeds from Kristin’s book sales will benefit STAR – St. Louis Avian Rescue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter the poetry reading\, guests are invited to tour Missouri Botanical Garden’s Peter H. Raven Library & Archives at the Bayer Center research institute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP is encouraged but not required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOKS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBirdwatching in the 4th Dimension  \n\n\n\nWith percussive alacrity Birdwatching in the 4th Dimension attunes us to the precarity and blinding wonder of life in ages past and present. Joy and mourning mingle in these startling poems\, mapped onto the fossil record and the humdrum calamities of the Anthropocene. In Emanuel’s poems\, the beat of a heard it enough to conjure crustaceans and crocuses\, megatheriea and mantises; it is enough to make them dance in the cosmic matrix of evolution\, death\, and rebirth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNest of Matches  \n\n\n\nNest of Matches is a lavish declaration of the beauty of the natural world\, queer identity\, and of the imagination set free. Whittemore’s third collection explores the complexities of love—romantic\, familial\, and love for place—and wonders at cycles of life\, finding that: “Every habit / even love—strangest / of them all—offers exhaustion / and renewal.” Moving seamlessly from meditations on the moon’s phases to explorations of dream spaces to searches for meaning through patterns of love and loss\, Whittemore’s work embodies the mysteries of dichotomies—grief and joy\, consciousness and unconsciousness\, habit and spontaneity—and how they coexist to create our identities. Throughout the collection\, Whittemore reveals how interior nature manifests into exterior habits and how physical landscapes shape the psyche. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT STAR-ST. LOUIS AVIAN RESCUE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTAR’s mission is to improve and enrich the lives of parrots through rescue\, rehabilitative fostering\, adoption and education. STAR is a foster-based organization. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our September Observable Readings\, Saint Louis Poetry Center is thrilled to welcome poet Anna Ojascastro Guzon for the August Sunday Workshop! This will be a generative workshop. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring Poetic Pathways: Curiosity\, Attention\, & Play \n\n\n\nIn this generative workshop\, attendees will explore how poems can begin from many kinds of inspiration: literature\, music\, visual art\, food\, the outdoors\, and playful writing challenges.  Together\, participants will begin by brainstorming aloud and writing as a group\, then move into individual writing time. \n\n\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to draft new work during the workshop and share works in progress aloud\, if they choose.  Anna Ojascastro Guzon’s approach draws on workshop practices developed by poets and educators David Lehman and Kenneth Koch\, and invites writers to use curiosity\, attention\, and creative play as pathways into new poems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGUIDELINES & REGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: this workshop is limited to 15 participants. DESCRIPTION:This reading will be held in-person at Focal Point\, and also streamed live to this event page and to Saint Louis Poetry Center’s Facebook page. \n\n\n\n\n\nPHOTO CREDIT: Darla Winn (Watkins) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoetry at the Point welcomes poets Chris Watkins & Grace McGovern. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCHRYSANTHEMUM (CHRIS) BROOK WATKINS is a trans poet/writer\, environmental activist\, and author of The Drag Gospel of Queer Jesus. Chris lives in North Florida and spends as much time as she can on the water and in the swamps. A proud board member of Apalachicola Riverkeeper\, Chris received their PhD in Poetry with a focus in Ecopoetics and Environmental Writing\, Poetic Forms\, and Queer Literature\, studying at Florida State University. Chris now works as the Academics and Partnerships Coordinator at FSU’s Office of Sustainability (Sustainable Campus) and teaches both writing and sustainability courses. Her recent work has appeared in The Academy of American Poets’ Poem a Day series\, in Poetry\, Ecotone\, and Terrain.org among other publications. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGRACE MCGOVERN is a poet whose work is concerned with the lyric voice\, lesbian domesticity and interiority\, and sites of simultaneous unease and tenderness—as well as kitschy figurines of all kinds. She is an MFA candidate in poetry at Washington University in St. Louis. She was born in Rhode Island and now lives in St. Louis with her wife and their dog and two cats. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVENUE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Poetry at the Point series is supported in part by:

Join SLICE and the Saint Louis Poetry Center for an afternoon of writing! \n\n\n\nSLICE and the Saint Louis Poetry Center are happy to co-host monthly Sip & Scribes at the High Low on the last Saturday of the month\, 12-1:30 p.m.!
