DESCRIPTION:The reading will be held in-person at High Low. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaint Louis Poetry Center welcomes poets Derrick Austin and Janice Harrington for Observable Readings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooks available for purchase from Left Bank Books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOKS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHIS ELEGANCE \n\n\n\nInterweaving the sacred and the erotic\, This Elegance engages with visual arts through the concept of sacra conversazione (“sacred conversation”)\, a style of Renaissance painting that imagines divine communion across time and space. Here\, artists\, thinkers\, and pop icons commune in a similar sacred dialogue—Kathleen Collins\, André Leon Talley\, Richmond Barthé\, Lyle Ashton Harris\, Juan de Pareja\, Janelle Monáe\, Symone\, and others appear as guiding spirits and creative kin. \n\n\n\nFor a Black\, queer person so often dislocated from time and place\, pleasure becomes an act of resistance—a grounding in the now. This Elegance is a love song—an offering to Black artistry\, a tribute to visionary lives\, and a testament to the power of beauty in even our most precarious moments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYARD SHOW \n\n\n\nBlack history\, cultural expression\, and the natural world fuse in Janice N. Harrington’s Yard Show to investigate how Black Americans have shaped a sense of belonging and place within the Midwestern United States. As seen through the documentation of objects found within yard shows\, this collection of descriptive\, lyrical\, and experimental poems speaks to the Black American Imagination in all its multiplicity. \n\n\n\nHarrington’s speaker is a chronicler of yesterdays\, using the events of the past to center and advocate for a future that celebrates pleasure and self-fulfillment within Black communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDERRICK AUSTIN is a poet and art writer. He is the author of three poetry collections: This Elegance (Boa Editions 2026); Tenderness (Boa Editions\, 2021)\, winner of the 2020 Isabella Gardner Poetry Award; and Trouble the Water (Boa Editions\, 2016)\, selected by Mary Szybist for the A. Poulin Jr\, Poetry Prize. He has had poems and essays commissioned by The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art\, The New Museum\, Craft Contemporary\, The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts\, The Brick (formerly LAXART)\, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He lives in Chicago. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJANICE HARRINGTON is a poet and children’s book author. A librarian who harbored a secret desire to write\, in the mid-1990s Janice N. Harrington returned to an old dream of writing poetry. Every day before work\, in the early hours of the morning\, Janice wrote poem after poem\, especially about her family and memories of the South. This led to her first book of poems\, Even the Hollow My Body Made Is Gone\, winner of the A. Poulin Jr. Poetry Prize and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award for Poetry\, and to her most recent book\, Yard Show\, winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and many other recognitions. Her first children’s picture book\, Going North\, is a winner of the Ezra Jack Keats Award. Her career as a children’s writer includes many picture books\, including two picture book biographies plus a popular verse novel. Janice lives in Champaign\, Illinois where she regularly visits local prairies\, Black history sites\, and any place that celebrates books. McLane). Bright Thorn\, distilling Devin Johnston’s work across a quarter century and seven books\, offers an alternative to our frenzied moment through the calm measured feeling and formal intelligence of his verse. Historical\, philosophical\, closely observational\, and rooted evenly in the deep poetic past and the daily rhythms of American life\, these poems open the world to imaginative scrutiny. Johnston is a chronicler in a Yeatsian sense\, whose eye\, cast discerningly over the landscape\, is affectionate yet icily clear. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRUN IN SUCH A WAY \n\n\n\nA poet’s candid and probing exploration of faith\, Blackness\, and masculinity. With poems that closely examine familial bonds and heritage\, biblical teachings\, a shifting understanding of home\, and the violence of toxic masculinity\, Justin Danzy’s Run in Such a Way sits at the crossroads of religion\, race\, gender\, and more. A collection about pursuit\, tracking the narrative of its speaker’s journey toward a deeper understanding of himself and of his community as he moves from child to man\, the book wrestles with the way an identity is constructed\, deconstructed\, and reconstructed again throughout one’s life. Playful and sincere in equal measure\, Danzy’s command of the line carries us through as we travel with the speaker to the precipice of belief. Danzy’s lyrical voice and fealty to his people pays homage to the world that made him\, and considers all that the speaker of this tremendous debut has—both wisely and foolishly—run toward and away from in the search for truth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDEVIN JOHNSTON spent his childhood in North Carolina. He is the author of eight books of poetry including Bright Thorn: Poems 2000–2026\, published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux in 2026. He has also published Creaturely and Other Essays\, meditations on the natural world. He works as an editor of Flood Editions\, a nonprofit publishing house\, and he teaches at Saint Louis University in Missouri. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJUSTIN DANZY is a poet and educator from Southfield\, Michigan\, and the author of Run in such a way (TriQuarterly Books/Northwestern University Press)\, which Rachel Eliza Griffiths described as “a vision of snare\, thorn\, tongue\, and the endless rhythms through which language skims its wings across the darkened faces of history\, memory\, and body.” He is a Cave Canem Fellow\, the 2019 Gregory Padlo Fellow at the Frost Place\, winner of New England Review’s Award for Emerging Writers\, a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee\, and the recipient of an Academy of American Poets University Prize. Danzy’s poems can be found in publications such as Pleiades: Literature in Context\, Poetry\, New England Review\, Missouri Review\, and Obsidian.
