DESCRIPTION:This reading will be held in-person at Focal Point\, and also streamed live to this event page and to Saint Louis Poetry Center’s Facebook page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoetry at the Point welcomes poets Miguel Barretto-García & Nicole Brunette. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMIGUEL BARRETTO-GARCÍA is a spoken word performer and neuroscientist in St. Louis. Their poems have appeared or have been in accepted in The Iowa Review\, Poetry Northwest\, & Change\, Wildness\, Rhino Poetry\, and Rattle\, among others. They have previously performed in the spoken word and poetry slam circuits in Switzerland and the US\, notably at the Zurich Theatre Spectacle\, The Chicago Filipino American Theatre Festival\, and Goodie House in St. Louis. They completed their PhD in Neuroecoconomics at the University of Zürich and they are currently a postdoctoral researcher at Washington University in St. Louis. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNICOLE BRUNETTE is a St. Louis native with a lifelong fascination for the things that scare her most. When she isn’t researching unsettling topics or working as a bookseller\, she writes about the strange and beautiful world of bugs. Nicole recently completed her MFA\, finishing her poetry thesis Anamnesis\, a collection that blends her earlier work with original art and photography. Dye and Lindsay McHugh. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nANGEL C. DYE is a poet and professor of African American Literature with roots in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and Dallas-Ft. Worth\, Texas. Dye received her B.A. in English from Howard University\, her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Kentucky\, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literatures from Rutgers. She is the author of two poetry collections entitled BREATHE (2021) and My Mouth a Constant Prayer (2023)\, and her work has appeared widely in journals and magazines. Dye teaches courses on Black women’s writing\, Harlem Renaissance Literature & Culture\, and more at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLINDSAY McHUGH is a poet and journalist based in St. Louis. Her debut chapbook\, un-memory\, was published by Bottlecap Press in 2025. She publishes journalism under the byline Lindsay Toler. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVENUE

He previously received a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale University and spent time before his MFA program working as a high school teacher at John Burroughs School in St. Louis. He continues his love of ecology through his writing while also exploring community\, love\, music\, and the importance of the aforementioned in the presence of environmental degradation and systemically permitted/propagated discrimination and violence\, with the hope of understanding himself and the world around him. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLYDIA GOLITZ is a second-year MFA student at Washington University in St. Louis. Her second book\, Laughing in Yiddish\, is forthcoming in 2025 by Broadstone Books and was a finalist for the 2022 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry. Her poems and essays have been published in various literary journals and anthologies\, including Feminine Rising\, Green Mountains Review\, Lilith\, Jet Fuel Review\, the Forward\, Poetica Magazine\, Catamaran\, and others. She contributes book reviews to the Jewish Book Council. She received a Pushcart Prize Honorable Mention and was nominated for Best Spiritual Literature. She was selected as an International Merit Award winner in the Atlanta Review 2022 International Poetry Competition. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Nebraska Omaha. After years of shaping Poetry at the Point with heart and creativity\, Kenneth will officially pass the torch to co-curators Macallan Lay and Andy Chen. Join us as we celebrate Kenneth’s remarkable contributions to the series and send him off with gratitude and joy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJet McDonald (they/he) is a writer\, dancer\, and aspiring mime. By day they work as a communications professional based here in St. Louis. Their work has appeared in places like the RFT and Typehouse Literary Magazine\, which nominated one of their poems for a Pushcart Prize. They hold an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) and served as UMSL’s sixth Poet Laureate. Lately Jet is most interested in cross-genre work. They are lucky to have a community of loved ones who embody how great the world could really be. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApollo Chastain (ze/hir\, he/him) is either crying in the club or crying in the archive. The recipient of an Academy of American Poets College Prize and nominee for a Pushcart Prize\, Apollo’s creative and academic work has been supported by Tin House and the Smithsonian Institution and appears or is forthcoming in journals including Poets.org\, Meridian\, The Michigan Quarterly Review\, Ninth Letter\, and RHINO\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Reading from Chamber after Chamber in a celebration of Saara Myrene Raappana\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis reading will be held in-person at Focal Point\, and also streamed live to this event page and to Saint Louis Poetry Center’s Facebook page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaara Myrene Raappana’s poetry is haunting\, beautiful\, and rich with Lake Superior landscapes. It bears witness to both the beauty and violence of rurality and the United States with linguistic whimsy and structural inventiveness. Her most recent book\, Chamber after Chamber\, won the 2023 Juniper Prize for Poetry and is a meditation on the word “heart” and its many meanings. Thoughtful and daring poetry\, Chamber after Chamber was published just days after Saara’s death at age 48. She received a PhD in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University\, and an MFA from The Ohio State University. She is also co-editor of Nine Mile Magazine and served as Poet Laureate of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula 2015-2017. She teaches at St Louis University High School. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Doise is an associate professor of English at Southwest Minnesota State University. He has published articles and chapters in several academic journals and anthologies\, including The Routledge Companion to Literature and Trauma. Learn more >> \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott Berzon earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan and is the recipient of the Frank Vincent Memorial Prize\, the Meader Family Award\, and the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship. Scott’s creative work has appeared in a variety of publications including Acorn\, Cream City Review\, Humana Obscura\, Poetry Midwest\, Quarter After Eight\, Southern Indiana Review\, and others. Scott lives with his family in St. Louis and works in Jewish communal settings. He serves as a poetry editor for december magazine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Pfeifer earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and returned to earn an M.A. in English\, studying poetry with Larry Levis. He earned an M.F.A. in poetry from the University of Iowa’s Writer’s Workshop where he studied with Marvin Bell\, Henry Carlile\, Donald Justice and Sandra McPherson. He has published in numerous literary journals and received the 1980 St. Louis Poetry Center Chancellor’s Award\, judged by Howard Nemerov\, and the 1987 Poet Lore Ratner-Ferber Award. He stopped submitting poems for publication in 1998\, but continued writing. He has recently started to again submit work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVENUE

She’s the recipient of a journalism fellowship from the Economic Security Project and Teen Vogue\, and has written for The Nation\, The New York Times\, Teen Vogue\, The Guardian\, In These Times Magazine\, and more. Germain is also the recipient of poetry fellowships from the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission\, Jack Jones Literary Arts\, Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop\, and more. Her first poetry chapbook\, When the Ghosts Come Ashore\, was published by Button Poetry in 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nALISON C. ROLLINS was awarded a 2023-2024 Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship and named a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow in 2019. In 2021\, her essay “Dispatch from the Racial Mountain” was selected by contest judge Kiese Laymon as the winner of the Gulf Coast prize in nonfiction. Her work\, across genres\, has appeared or is forthcoming in American Poetry Review\, Black Warrior Review\, Iowa Review\, The New York Times Magazine\, and elsewhere. A Cave Canem and Callaloo fellow\, she was a 2016 recipient of the Poetry Foundation’s Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship. In 2018\, she was a recipient of the Rona Jaffe Writers’ Award and in 2020\, the winner of a Pushcart Prize. Rollins is the author of Black Bell (Copper Canyon Press\, 2024) and the debut poetry collection\, Library of Small Catastrophes (Copper Canyon Press\, 2019) which was a 2020 Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award nominee. Rote notions of home and the domestic are reimagined in these poems as estranging\, excessive\, and populated by unknowable characters. Exploring themes of family\, sacrifice\, disease\, death\, money\, cooking\, romance\, sex\, art\, and the visceral qualities of the everyday\, the poems twist themselves into binds for the reader to undo or surrender to. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANCOFILAMENTSby Eileen G’Sell \n\n\n\nVacillating between prose and verse\, Francofilaments presents a varied sojourn through a woman’s trials and tribulations as reimagined\, and filtered through\, French culture and film. Several poems are based on\, or excerpt from\, interviews G’Sell conducted with French or French-speaking actors and filmmakers—including Juliette Binoche\, Celine Sciamma\, and Isabelle Huppert—while others excerpt from an extensive list of reviews and essays published on Francophone cinema. In investigating Francophilia\, G’Sell likewise plumbs the depths of national\, gendered\, and racial identity. While her background as a critic informs many of these poems\, the collection is also based in part on her experience as a single woman in her thirties—chronicling romantic (mis)adventures as well as orbiting more serious themes around sexuality\, mortality\, and pregnancy loss. This volume is a cinematic excavation of interiority—the author’s\, but also that which we see and hear onscreen.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoAnna Novak‘s memoir Contradiction Days was published by Catapult in July 2023. Her short story collection Meaningful Work won the Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Contest and was published by FC2. She is the author of the novel I Must Have You and three books of poetry: New Life; Abeyance\, North America; and Noirmania. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Paris Review\, the New York Times\, The Atlantic\, and other publications. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEileen G’Sell is a poet and critic with recent contributions to Poetry\, Oversound\, Hyperallergic\, The Baffler\, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In 2023\, she received the Rabkin Prize for arts journalism. Her second volume of poetry\, Francofilaments\, is forthcoming from Broken Sleep Books in late 2024; in 2025\, her first nonfiction book\, Lipstick\, will be published as part of Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons series. Her poetry explores the coexistence of pain and beauty in everyday life\, and most recently her poem “They Look So Small\, Lying There” won Second Honorable Mention at the 2024 Wednesday Club Original Poetry competition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark W. Kumming has a Masters Degree in English and taught ESL and Comp at the University level. A former RN\, he completed a career as a medical products sales rep and trainer in 2010. Mark is 72 and returned to writing poetry two years ago after a 50 year hiatus. He volunteers with Saint Louis Poetry Center and also raises money for Circle of Concern food pantry in Valley Park. He facilitates the Babler Poetry Society\, a collection of St. Louis poets who write poetry and read one another’s work. Her other books are The Dead in Daylight (Cooper Dillon Books\, 2016) and The Convert’s Heart is Good to Eat (Driftwood Press\, 2022). Melody’s work has received support from the Sustainable Arts Foundation\, the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis\, and Kundiman. A former English professor\, Melody now works in communications and marketing\, and lives with her family in St. Louis\, Missouri. Her first collection of memoir essays is forthcoming from the University of Iowa Press. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolina Hotchandani is a Latinx/South Asian poet born in Brazil and raised in various parts of the United States. Her debut poetry collection The Book Eaters won the 2023 Perugia Press Prize and was released in September 2023. Hotchandani holds degrees from Brown\, Texas State\, and Northwestern universities. Her honors include scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, Rona Jaffe Foundation\, Community of Writers\, Tin House Writers’ Workshop\, and Napa Valley Writers’ Conference. Her poetry has appeared in AGNI\, Alaska Quarterly Review\, Beloit Poetry Journal\, Blackbird\, Cincinnati Review\, Missouri Review\, Prairie Schooner\, and other journals. She is a Goodrich Assistant Professor of English in Omaha\, Nebraska\, where she lives with her husband and daughter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Anderson‘s most recent book is a memoir\, My Brother Speaks in Dreams: Of Family\, Beauty & Belonging (Wising Up Press). She has published four collections of poetry\, including Everyone I Love Immortal (Woodley Press)\, Woman with a Gambling Mania (Mayapple Press)\, The Work of Hands (Perugia Press) and In the Mother Tongue (Alice James Books). She has received awards in poetry from the Massachusetts Artists’ Foundation (many years ago)\, and more recently\, I-70 Review and Crab Orchard Review. Equally necessary\, however\, is an acknowledgement of the path left to walk\, especially in St. Louis\, a town known globally for both racism and resistance. Learn more >> \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJason Vasser-Elong is assistant teaching professor in the Pierre Laclede Honors College and a doctoral candidate in the College of Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis\, where he earned an MFA in creative writing and studied cultural anthropology and African Diaspora studies. He is the author of Shrimp (2Leaf Press\, 2018)\, a collection of poetry that analyzes identity in a post-colonial context. His current research is centered on peacemaking\, with an additional focus on student learning environments. Recently\, Jason received the University of Missouri South African Education Program Fellowship and will continue his research\, as Dr. Elong\, this summer at the University of the Western Cape\, Cape Town\, South Africa. An avid reader and writer\, Jason has poetry and prose forthcoming in River Styx\, Uno\, and Callaloo. In 2022\, he served as poet-in-residence for Sapiens\, and will travel to Toronto for the American Anthropological Association annual meeting this year to read poetry as part of the Association of Black Anthropologists (ABA) Transforming Anthropology reception. A proud member of the ABA and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity\, Inc.\, Jason is currently curating an anthology of poetry with the Lights of Alpha mentoring program with his local chapter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAsha Marie Larson-Baldwin (she/her) is a South Carolinian living in St. Louis while she works towards her PhD in Sociology. She writes at the intersections of poetry and prose\, experimenting with brevity and intimacy while exploring the contours and interiorities of her own fleeting girlhood. It gets at the gigantic by getting tiny. The poetry of Kirby Ewald and Kristin Emanuel live in this world of detail because it is the world we live in\, too. Her work touches upon her experiences as a museum and zoo professional\, a wife and mother\, and someone passionate about moving to new places without vetting them first. She is an emerging writer and holds a BA in international relations with minors in creative writing and political science from George Washington University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKristin Emanuel holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Kansas where she studied ecofabulism and the comics poetry movement. The group of 6-10 members meets once a quarter at 222 Artisan Bakery in Edwardsville\, Illinois. Meetings consist of critique of each others work\, a celebration of each of others successes\, and general fellowship among like minded poets.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen Gaa is your Friendly Neighborhood Haiku Poet and host of Haiku Talk on YouTube. He’s the author of two full length collections of haiku and senryu\, One Breath (Spartan Press 2020)\, and the Touchstone Award winning Wishbones (Folded Word 2018)\, as well as four chapbooks\, the High/Coo award winner One Note Moon (Brooks Books 2023)\, Fiddle in the Floorboards (Yavanika Press 2018)\, Blowing on a Hot Soup Spoon (Poor Metaphor Design 2014) and the Pushcart nominated Wasp Shadows (Folded Word 2014). Han is Professor of English & Creative Writing and Associate Dean of Humanities & Theology at Missouri Baptist University in Creve Coeur. He is the author\, translator\, editor\, or co-editor of 33 books\, including 11 poetry collections. He works as a mental health therapist for the New Mexico Corrections Department. Most recently his work has appeared in the New England Review\, Laurel Review\, Lily Poetry Review\, The Cortland Review\, Guesthouse\, and the Poem-a-Day series sponsored by the Academy of American Poets. Susto\, his full-length debut collection of poems\, published by the Center for Literary Publishing\, is a 2023 Mountain/West Poetry Series title. He is also the author of the chapbook\, Fieldnotes (Lily Poetry Review & Books\, 2023). He lives and writes on the Cochiti Reservation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nARIANA BENSON was born in Norfolk\, Virginia. Her debut collection\, Black Pastoral (University of Georgia Press) won the 2022 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. Benson has also received the Furious Flower Poetry Prize and the Porter House Review Poetry Prize\, and the 2021 Graybeal Gowen Prize for Virginia Poets. Her poems and essays appear or are forthcoming in POETRY Magazine\, Ploughshares\, Poem-a-Day\, Copper Nickel\, the Kenyon Review\, and elsewhere. Learn more >> \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt. Louis-born poet\, songwriter\, and musician Dannie Boyd (Dannie B) enjoys writing about romance\, self-discovery\, and social justice. Dannie’s interest in poetry began in 2008 while studying creative writing and journalism at St. Louis Community College – Florissant Valley. He learned to play the guitar\, bass\, and piano shortly after. The Florissant Valley Poetry Club voted him the most prolific poet of 2009. St. Louis Public Radio also featured his dramatic story of photographing the 2014 Ferguson demonstrations in their “Living Ferguson” event\, a nationally broadcast program on NPR. Dannie is continuing to work on the fusion of poetry and music. Dannie also continues to develop his work related to the Ferguson demonstrations\, expanding on the existing photography\, performative work\, and presentations. More information is available on his website\, DannieB.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRichard Fischer grew up in the wild lands in the center of America near the big mounds and down river from the land of the mythic Huck where he was taught abstraction skills in the educational institutions of the later 20th century. He was adopted by the Muse at an early age and has enjoyed the works of his Muse siblings in this and other ages. He enjoys the connection he feels when he becomes one with the flow of word music. He is the recipient of a Whiting Award\, a Rome Prize in Literature\, a Pushcart Prize\, the Levis Reading Prize\, and an NEA Fellowship in Literature. Donovan serves as Director of the Boutelle-Day Poetry Center at Smith College. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nELIZABETH HOOVER is the author of the archive is all in present tense\, winner of the 2021 Barrow Street Book Prize. Using somatic language captured through a notebook practice\, Teare recontextualizes the work of Agnes Martin\, Jasper Johns\, and others via art criticism\, psychoanalysis\, biography\, queer theory\, and historical document to honor writers\, artists\, and thinkers who sustain us when nothing else does. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU AREDana Levin \n\n\n\nWritten between 2016 and 2020\, Now Do You Know Where You Are investigates how great change calls the soul out “to be a messenger—to record whatever wanted to stream through.” Levin works in a variety of forms\, calling on beloveds and ancestors\, great thinkers and religions—convened by her own spun-of-light wisdom and intellectual hospitality. Balancing clear-eyed forensics of the past with vatic knowledge of the future\, Levin writes: “So many bodies a soul has to press through: personal\, familial\, regional\, national\, global\, planetary\, cosmic— // ‘Now do you know where you are?’”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA 2020 Guggenheim Fellow\, BRIAN TEARE is the author of seven critically acclaimed books\, including Doomstead Days\, winner of the Four Quartets Prize and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. His most recent publications are a pair of book-length ekphrastic projects exploring queer abstraction\, chronic illness\, and collage: the 2022 Nightboat reissue of The Empty Form Goes All the Way to Heaven\, and the fall 2023 publication of Poem Bitten by a Man. An Associate Professor of Poetry at the University of Virginia\, Brian lives in Charlottesville\, where he makes books by hand for his micropress\, Albion Books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDANA LEVIN is the author of five books poetry. Her latest is Now Do You Know Where You Are (Copper Canyon Press)\, a 2022 New York Times Notable Book and NPR “Book We Love.” Other books include Banana Palace (2016) and Sky Burial (2011)\, which The New Yorker called “utterly her own and utterly riveting.” Recent poems and essays have appeared in Poem-a-day\, Best American Poetry\, The American Poetry Review\, and Poetry\, among other publications. She is a grateful recipient of many honors\, including those from the National Endowment for the Arts\, PEN\, and the Library of Congress\, as well as from the Rona Jaffe\, Whiting\, and Guggenheim Foundations. With Adele Elise Williams\, she co-edited Bert Meyers: On the Life and Work of an American Master (2023) for the Unsung Masters Series. Learn more >> \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE POETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGloria Day is a writer and illustrator who is currently based in St. Louis\, MO. Though she spent nearly a decade of her life teaching at the early childhood and elementary school levels\, she has continued to grow as a poet and author of self-published children’s books over the years. Though most of her work is inspired by her love and respect for children and their perspective\, her goal is to spend more time digging into heavier and more complex subjects for adults through poetry. In 2020\, she took on the role of full time caregiver for her mother who was diagnosed with dementia. Fully understanding the responsibility and the ever-evolving challenges of caregiving\, her most recent poetry has been shaped by her new role. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLesley Day is the author of Authenticity\, a raw collection of poetry that tells a story of the darkest tales\, and the deepest thoughts. Day has been published in several anthologies\, but Authenticity (Ink Soul Publishing 2022) is her first full length collection. Her forthcoming collections The Absence of Light and IMPACT – A Woman’s Story from Surviving to Living (Ink Soul Publishing) will be released in 2023. Day travels throughout Missouri performing her poetry and is the host of Sunday Night Poetry at Spine Bookstore & Café in St. Louis\, Missouri\, and Jefferson County Poetry and Open Mic Night at Savannah’s Coffee Corral in Pevely\, Missouri. Day resides in a small town in Missouri\, with her two young daughters and her one little pupkid.

They are a co-publisher of FreezeRay Poetry and writer for Black Nerd Problems. Their poems have been featured in Radius Lit\, decomP\, and Button Poetry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAubrey Byron is a writer and journalist from St. Louis\, Missouri. She has written for Slate\, Gear Junkie\, Streetsblog\, and Feast Magazine. She is working on her first collection of poems\, many of which are inspired by nature.
