In conjunction with our April Observable Readings, Saint Louis Poetry Center is thrilled to welcome poet Devin Johnston for the April Sunday Workshop! This will be a generative workshop.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Poetry and the Senses
In this workshop, we will explore ways of writing sensory experience. By rendering particular sensations with vividness and accuracy, we imply an entire world. Using brief excerpts from poetry as models, we will work collaboratively, focusing on ways of capturing tastes and smells, in particular. We will not aim for finished poems, but strong sensory images that might form the basis of future work.
GUIDELINES & REGISTRATION
Please note: this workshop is limited to 15 participants. Registration is required, and is first-come, first-served.
- Registration is due by Wednesday, April 14
- This is a generative workshop in which participants will draft & revise their own poems
- No poem submissions will be accepted for this event
- Poets will not review manuscripts or provide feedback ahead of time
- Those registering are expected to attend the workshop

ABOUT THE POET
DEVIN JOHNSTON spent his childhood in North Carolina. He is the author of eight books of poetry including Bright Thorn: Poems 2000–2026, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2026. He has also published Creaturely and Other Essays, meditations on the natural world. He works as an editor of Flood Editions, a nonprofit publishing house, and he teaches at Saint Louis University in Missouri.
