Saint Louis Poetry Center is thrilled to welcome poet Eileen G’Sell for the August Sunday Workshop! This will be a generative workshop focused on the power of sensory description.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Hot Words, Live LINES: Tension and Surprise in Language
Brain scans demonstrate that our neurons light up differently when we read concrete, sensory language rather than abstractions. What does that mean for poets? In this generative workshop, we will explore how poetry can embrace the power of sensory description.
GUIDELINES & REGISTRATION
Please note: this workshop is limited to 12 participants. Registration is required, and is first-come, first-served.
- Registration is due by Sunday, August 17
- This is a generative workshop in which participants will draft & revise their own poems
- No poem submissions will be accepted for this event
- Poets will not review manuscripts or provide feedback ahead of time
- Those registering are expected to attend the workshop

ABOUT THE POET
EILEEN G’SELL is a poet and critic with recent contributions to Poetry, Oversound, Hyperallergic, The Baffler, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In 2023, she received the Rabkin Prize for arts journalism. Her second volume of poetry, Francofilaments, was published by Broken Sleep Books in 2024; in 2026, her first nonfiction book, Lipstick, will be published as part of Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons series. She teaches at Washington University in St. Louis.
