A Celebration of Whitman at 200
In celebration of Walt Whitman’s 200th Birthday, the Humanities Department and the Medart Lecture Series at Maryville University, in collaboration with the St. Louis Poetry Center, is delighted to present WHITMANIA, a semester-long series of events. Widely considered the father of American Poetry, Walt Whitman has had continuous influence on contemporary poets, writers, artists, composers, and thinkers in America and abroad.
Whitman Up Close

Whitman Up Close is an exhibition presented by Maryville University at the Morton J. May Foundation Gallery. The exhibition opening reception includes a brief gallery talk by Dr. Germaine Murray at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Writing Like Whitman: Chants, Catalogs & Litanies is a poetry workshop with Dana Levin presented by St. Louis Poetry Center at Maryville University’s May Gallery, in conjunction with the Whitman Up Close exhibition. The workshop includes a brief public gallery talk by Dr. Germaine Murray. Lunch is provided for registered workshop participants. Registration now closed.
BookFest St. Louis

BookFest St. Louis kicks off with a Whitman poetry reading by local poets at the Mahler Ballroom, sponsored by St. Louis Poetry Center. Dr. Germaine Murray will offer a brief introduction to WHITMANIA and the vision for the project, including Walt Whitman’s St. Louis connections.

Walt Whitman and the Problem of Everyone is a public lecture with 2019 NEA Big Read author Stephanie Burt presented by Maryville University. The lecture takes place at the President’s Conference Center in Gander Hall. Refreshments will be served.
